Elderly DV couple scared after robbery

AN ELDERLY Duncan Village couple was robbed while sleeping in their home on Wednesday night.

Wilson and Amelia Makubalo, who have lived in their home for 29 years, are now living in fear.

“The thief entered through the window and jumped onto the bed that I was sleeping on,” said Makubalo.

Elderly people have become targets for thieves and rapists. Their inability to physically defend themselves is what criminals are using against them, police said.

Police in Duncan Village provide counselling for elderly crime victims.

The Makubalos said their home was an easy target.

“Our window does not close properly. When it rains muddy water flows inside. When the municipality went around fixing doors and windows in other homes, they did not do that for us.

“We have been begging our councillor for a new window since 2003,” said Amelia.

Local ward councillor, Clara Morolong, expressed her sympathy .

Makubalo said: “I was scared. I could have been raped.”

The Daily Dispatch has reported on several incidents where elderly people were on the receiving end of criminal actions. Earlier this year a granny in Dimbaza was raped and killed in Ntonga village.

Last year an elderly man was shot and wounded during a house break-in. —
