Sadness at burial of young drowning victim

THE sound of inconsolable sobbing echoed in the JFS Chapel in Gonubie on Saturday as family and friends bid a final farewell to six-year-old Damian Christian, who drowned in a school swimming pool last Sunday.

Speaker after speaker spoke fondly about little Damian at the service.

“Here lies an angel who was sent to this earth to bring joy, love and peace to those that surrounded him and today we are giving him a proper send-off,” said Pastor Waynand Joseph.

The boy ’s death has left the Southernwood community devastated.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch on the day of the incident 15-year-old Trystan Piel, who attempted to rescue Damian, said that he had heard screams and jumped over the school fence, dived into the pool, pulled Damian out and laid him on the grass.

JFS Funeral Services, Buffalo City Metro and members of the East London community helped to pay for the funeral.

Managing director at JFS Johan Rousseau said they were touched by the family’s tragic loss and felt they needed to help give little Damian a proper burial.

“After hearing about this tragic loss, we decided to provide them with everything at no cost to ensure that Damian’s final farewell is dignified.

“We did this purely out of compassion,” said Rousseau.

Family friend Rene Cilliers who spoke on behalf of the family, said that the family and the community would always remember Damian as a peaceful and quiet boy.

“He was not a fighter, he got along with everyone and we will always miss his angelic character.” —
