Flooding death toll rises to ten

TWO more bodies have been found while 2000 residents displaced by torrential rains which submerged homes, uprooted trees and damaged roads in parts of the former Transkei are expected to start returning home.

More than 1800 flood victims from Slovo Park, Pola Park, Mandela Park, Norwood, Coffee Bay and Mqanduli sought shelter at various community halls and churches.

A further 120 people from Green’s Farm, Mthumbane and low-lying areas in Port St Johns were accommodated at the Catholic school.

Another two deaths as a result of the flooding have been reported, taking the death toll to 10.

Government Communications and Information Systems (GCIS) regional spokesman Ndyebo Kopo said one person had died in Norwood and another person in Sicambeni, Port St Johns.

The victims had not been identified. The deaths were announced at a time the provincial government is taking steps to declare the worst hit areas as disaster areas in order to access national funds for relief.

Local government spokesman Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha said disaster officials were busy assessing the extent of the damage.

A report will then be forwarded to Premier Noxolo Kiviet to declare them disaster areas.

“When the premier has declared the disaster, government will allocate funds ,” he said.
