The rainbow nation living in suburbia

SUBURBAN blacks have overtaken whites in East London’s formerly whites-only suburbs of Bunkers Hill, Southernwood, Quigney , Amalinda , Sunnyridge and Highgate.

Black suburbanites also live in significant numbers in Beacon Bay , Abbotsford, Cambridge , Vincent, Vincent Heights, Stirling, Berea, Selborne, Chiselhurst and Baysville.

This is according to information from the latest Census 2011 place and sub-place data released on Monday by statistician-general Pali Lehohla.

The elite suburb of Bunkers Hill is home to 684 blacks, more than double the 315 whites, 66 coloureds and 48 Asians or Indians. Black residents make up 61% of Bunkers Hill residents and whites 10.1%.

Three Bunkers Hill residents objected to the race question or did not fit any of the racial categories and marked themselves as “other”.

Blacks in Beacon Bay north (2034) are almost level with whites (2601), with 183 coloured, 162 Indian or Asian and 39 “others” making up the total of 5019.

Black residents are overwhelmingly in the majority in Southernwood (8484 blacks, 1305 whites, 399 coloured, 171 Indians or Asians and 78 others).

The Quigney beachfront, with its high student population, is home to 8472 blacks, 1713 whites, 597 coloureds, 342 Indians or Asians and 132 others.

Amalinda north houses 2754 blacks, 1068 whites, 357 coloured, 144 Indians or Asians and 45 others.

In the remainder of Amalinda, 2571 black people outnumber almost ten times the 267 whites. There are 282 coloured, 63 Asians or Indians and 18 other people.

In Sunnyridge, there are six more black residents (756) than white (750), with 126 coloured, 69 Indian or Asian and 18 others. Highgate has 180 blacks and 144 whites.

There are slightly fewer black residents than whites in Abbotsford (435 blacks to 642 whites), Cambridge West (1365 to 2052), Vincent Heights (327 to 429), Stirling (114 to 159) and Chiselhurst (699 to 882).

Suburbs where black post-apartheid upward mobility has been relatively unremarkable are Berea (684 blacks to 1854 whites), Selborne (363 to 747), and the former white- Afrikaner stronghold of Baysville ( 474 blacks to 1434 whites).

West Bank is now home to 750 blacks, compared to 1185 whites.

The black-coloured mix remains prevalent in Parkridge with its 2154 coloured and 1100 black residents. There are 18 whites living there.

Parkside is predominantly coloured (2418) compared to 264 blacks, but the largest number of coloured people live in Buffalo Flats (15741) with 5676 blacks, 183 Indians or Asians and 51 whites.

Some whites were counted in predominantly black areas, such as 30 whites living with 11541 blacks in Rheeston, 24 whites living with 4149 blacks in Siyakha, six whites with 4962 blacks in Cambridge Village, six whites among 17388 blacks and 1914 coloured residents in Scenery Park and three whites living with 5199 blacks in Bebelele.

Indians and Asians are concentrated in Braelyn Heights (642) and Braelyn Hills (627), Quigney beachfront (342), Beacon Bay North (162), Blue Bend (150), Amalinda North (144), Berea (135), Selborne (126), Baysville (120) and Vincent (105). —
