More money needed to give airport project wings

Three contracting companies in a row reneged on tender obligations

THE provincial government has yet again failed to renovate ensure that the terminal at the Mthatha Airport is completed on time.

This is despite the allocation of R60-million for the project construction of a new, bigger terminal.

She was unable to say exactly how much has already been spent on the project, saying only “a lot of money” has been spent already. Kiviet said government was now looking at “resuscitating” the work without having to restart the tender process.

“We are now looking at legal ways of checking which companies qualify – which company came second during the procurement process.

“We are short circuiting the process but within the law. We are exploring a number of options but the legal people must advise us what to do. We had already paid a great deal of money for the work. They stopped work before they could even complete the wall.

“They were in the school projects – there were about four projects at the same time but they did not have the muscle to handle them all. They simply crumbled. The money that is available now won’t help us finish that pro ject because of escalating costs.” — abongilem@dispatch.co.za
