BORN in January 1996, Mawande Ndayi, a Grade 10 pupil at Jumba Senior Secondary school in Mthatha, had a very difficult up bringing compared to other boys of his age.
He had to sell wood in order for his family to have money to buy groceries and to pay for his schooling.
On weekends, he would drive his father’s bakkie to collect wood in the nearest forest to sell in the village.
He saved what he could to go to initiation school.
However, Mawande died in Mthatha General Hospital after suffering complications at the initiation school.
His mother, Nofikile Ndayi told the Daily Dispatch that her son had also been the breadwinner for the family.
“He would bring any money that he made from the business, so that we could buy food,” said Ndayi.
The late Mawande also loved church as he was a member of the Methodist Church of South Africa.
“He never had time for friends, all he lived for was his family. He loved church and school work. We really going to miss him, he was everything to this family,” said his mother. — lulamilef@dis patch.co.za
