Introducing Sinolwethu Mavukwana

A PROUD grandfather who had pulled out all the stops to welcome his grandson home in style today has a broken heart.

Zwelonakele Mavukwana, grandfather to Sinolwethu, 15, who died at an initiation school in Bizana, says he was told by doctors that his grandson had died of dehydration but it’s hard to believe that.

“His body had assault marks and wounds. While dehydration might be one of the reasons he died, we were shocked when we saw his body,” he said.

Mavukwana said he was told that his grandson had been refused water.

“He was denied water to drink. He wanted me to be there but we could not be, all we were told is to fork out money for groceries. We were not allowed to visit.”

Sinolwethu was in Grade 8 at a local school and had dreams of passing matric before deciding what he wanted to do in life.

“He always said that only after matric would he decide what he wanted to do and we respected that,” said the grandfather.

The young man is believed to have attended an unregistered initiation school. “We were only prepared for him to go in the next season, but he went now despite this. I had pulled out all the stops to have a grand welcoming for him. But that is shattered now,” said Mavukwana.

The family wants the person who was looking after him in the school to come forward to tell them what happened. “To have closure on this I would love to meet the person who was looking after him in person to tell me what happened there. It’s a painful experience when your children pass away without fulfilling their dreams,” said Mavukwana. — bonganif@dispatch.co.za
