Zahara’s sisters are doing it

ZAHARA’S three older sisters are set on emulating their famous sibling and are working on releasing their debut gospel album.

Known as the Mkutukana Sisters, it has been their dream to record an album, ever since starting singing in the early 1990s.

“We’ve always wanted to record an album and in 1996 we recorded with Mandla Makubalo and Thembelani Batala, but we never finished that project.” This year the sisters recorded a demo with Batala who remembered them from the 1990s.

Nomonde said they were “discovered” by East London company, Miaay Sounds, when they held a ceremony for Zahara at their Phumlani home last year.

“After recording the demo, Miaay Sounds signed us and we started working on our new album,” she said.

Zahara said she was happy her sisters were recording their own album.

“I always tell people I’m from a musical family. This was bound to happen. I’m behind them all the way and I am praying for them.”

She said Nomonde had always been the best singer in the family. “She used to lead all the songs in our group. I always thought she would be out there before anyone else in the family.”

Zahara said she was looking forward to singing with her sisters on some of their songs. “When they were up in Johannesburg we did a couple of their songs but it’s a pity I was also working on my album when they recorded theirs.”

Zahara said in the next two years or so the entire Mkutukana family would be singing together. She said when her sisters were in Pretoria with her last December she asked them to perform with her on some of her songs.

“They won’t make it big because of my name, it will be because of God. I believe in their talent and music,” she said.

The sisters were at the centre of controversy last year saying their sister’s managers were not paying her.

When asked to comment on this, they said some of the things published were untrue.

“We are currently ourselves about the music business. We want to know everything about it to avoid any misunderstandings,” said Bandezwa.
