Top SA artists wow Mthatha music lovers

MTHATHA came alive this weekend with a host of A-list musicians descending on the city, sending a blast of sound through the air which lasted until the early hours of the morning.

The occasion was the second annual Mthatha Heritage Festival held in a large marquee at the Mthatha Country Club on Saturday.

Organisers thanked media sponsors, including the Daily Dispatch, for giving the event exposure.

The event drew scores of die-hard music lovers and party-goers who were all dressed to thrill.

Legendary musicians and crowd favourites including Hugh Masekela, Soul Brothers and Blondie Makhene, had the crowd eating out of their hands with their different music genres.

Younger music lovers were entertained by three-member band The Soil, Toya Delazy, and Berita.

Local musicians used the event to showcase their talent.

Founder of the festival and UDM leader Bantu Holomisa and Tando Mabunu-Mandela said they were blessed with sunny weather.

Holomisa said the event had a positive impact on the local economy as hotels, garages and restaurants were buzzing with customers.

The event was founded by businesswoman and owner of De Leul’z International fashion outlet, Thandokazi Sapepa-Nogaga.

Partners included King Sabata Dalindyebo, the KSD Local Municipality, Bantu Holomisa’s Champions of Environment tree-planting campaign and Nodayimani Investments, which is owned by Tando Mabunu-Mandela.

Tickets cost R200 to R500 and sales were positive with VIP tickets sold out.

The event was incident free and there had been no negative feedback, said Holomisa.

He said: “It was bigger and better. It’s improving every year and we are pleased with the progress.

“Hopefully it will pick up even more momentum next year.”

Masekela and soul group The Soil were not allowed to leave the stage as the audience demanded more.

Although not packed to capacity, the event drew die-hard music lovers from as far as Port Elizabeth.

The event was preceded by a round of golf at the adjacent Mthatha Country Club.

Makhene and Masekela told the Dispatch that heritage should be celebrated 365 days a year. –– loyisom@dispatch.co.za
