Satma glitz blitz hits city tonight

THE who’s who of the South African showbiz industry have flocked to East London for tonight’s annual achievement awards in traditional music.

Some of the stars attending the glitzy South African Traditional Music Achievement Awards (Satma) event at Buffalo Park include Isidingo actors Kgomotso Christopher, Motlatsi Mafatshe, Tema Sebopedi and Sisa Hewana; Graeme Richards and Leigh-Anne Williams from SABC3’s Expresso; Lorna Lukhele and Simba Mhere from Top Billing; and Noeleen Maholwana-Sanqu from 3Talk.

“I didn’t want to come back to the industry the same, I wanted to learn some new skills and come back with a bang,” he said.

Ngcobo’s single, Into Emnandi, from his upcoming album, is already making airwaves. “Later this month it’s my birthday and I’ll launch the album around that time. For now I have not yet decided what to call it,” he said.

Tonight will also see founder Dumisani Goba being honoured for initiating the awards. Goba urged people to remember the Satma awards were started to promote the country’s diversity and unite the nation.

“People should always ensure that they do not use the Satma awards as a divisive instrument but rather as something that unites us and showcases similarities rather than differences,” said Goba.

“The objective of these awards is to provide an environment where our people can sing, dance and eat together as a nation of Africans regardless of who wins.”

Buffalo City Metro spokesman Keith Ngesi said the city was ready to host the event for the second time. “The Satma awards are here again, and this proves that the metro is a destination of choice when it comes to entertainment and sport.

“This will also boost our economy,” he said.

Ngesi said BCM law enforcement officers would work with the South African Police to ensure all those attending the event were safe. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
