Concern as King school numbers dwindle

Former pupils, teachers, priests pray for success.

FORMER pupils, parents and teachers at a King William’s Town high school have appealed for divine intervention as matric pupils start writing their final examinations today.

He said the EAA, established in 2007, was not only about motivating pupils, but to ensure that education remained the number one priority in the village with every villager playing a role in this course.

He said it was concerned, however, that the school enrolment was drastically decreasing.

“We cannot sit down while the numbers are plummeting drastically. It cannot be, in our lifetime, that we let the school die while we are here.

“Many of us are professionals with high levels at our work places so we must together with teachers and parents change the situation,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the school management, Mapaseka Dyani said that despite the good pass rate, the school numbers were disappointingly dwindling.

“In 2007 we achieved a 75% matric pass rate and last year we obtained 61%. This year we aim for 100%.

“The unfortunate scenario is that such a good pass rate is seemingly not enticing to some of the community members, and this is an unfortunate scenario,” said Dyani.

School governing body chairman Tshangisa Mjijela said they would embark on a robust campaign to ensure that the enrolment numbers started returning to normal.

“We have to revive Matsa High and return it to its former glory and this prayer will ensure that we achieve our goals,” he said.

The school was established in 1981 and has only 300 pupils from Grade 8 to Grade 12.

Matsa High School used to have more than 100 matric pupils, but this year there are only 28.

The village headman, Jeremiah Matwa, joined Sanco chairman Xhego Momeni and Sadtu’s Luzuko Plaatjie in making a commitment to ensure better education and increase the number of pupils at the school. — lulamilef@dispatch.co.za
