Injured boxer can’t wait to be back in ring in spite of second collapse

Doctors advise him to give it up but that will kill him, he says.

DUNCAN Village boxer Bongani Mfundisi, who collapsed in the ring on Sunday after being knocked out by Malibongwe Mntusanto, has regained consciousness.

According to his mentor, Mzi Mnguni, the fighter has fully recovered, although he is being kept under observation.

Shortly after his knockout defeat in the sixth round of his Eastern Cape mini-flyweight title defence against Mntusanto at Orient Theatre, Mfundisi began convulsing, before losing consciousness while still in the ring.

He was rushed to Frere Hospital and then transferred to Cecilia Makiwane Hospital in Mdantsane.

Mnguni said: “This morning he called saying he wants to go home.”

This is the second time Mfundisi has been rushed to hospital after a fight, the first after being knocked out in the seventh round by Simpiwe Konkco in a clash for the vacant SA mini-flyweight crown at Orient Theatre in June last year.

He spent two weeks in hospital after the Konkco fight and doctors then advised him to stop fighting. But he was allowed to fight again after submitting a medical clearance certificate to Boxing SA (BSA) in June this year.

BSA’s handling of the matter has raised questions, especially as the body did not submit Mfundisi to its own appointed doctor for a second opinion.

Sunday’s fight was his first since the fight against Konkco.

Boxing SA Eastern Cape manager Phakamile Jacobs refused to say if Mfundisi will be allowed to fight again after this second scare.

The fighter reportedly called one of his mentors, Dingaan Somtsorha, from his hospital bed informing him that he intends to continue fighting.

“I advised him to quit boxing because it will kill him and Mfundisi countered, saying quitting boxing is what will kill him,” said Somtsorha, who once trained Mfundisi.

Jacobs said doctors have promised to discharge Mfundisi this week.
