Lawyers go after Mandla’s cattle

50 cows attached to foot his bill for top Cape Town legal eagles.

MANDLA Mandela risks losing 50 cows from his Mvezo stock unless he settles an outstanding legal bill with Cape attorney Randall Titus.

The cattle have already been attached by court officials to settle around R500000 Nelson Mandela’s grandson owes his legal team for various cases they have represented him.

Calls to Mandla’s cellphone went unanswered yesterday.

Earlier, Titus had confirmed the sheriff of the court had already attached the 50 cows which he found at the Mvezo chief’s homestead and a sale in execution has been scheduled for 10am on Friday November 26, at Mvezo Great Place.

Titus e-mailed a copy of the draft notice of sale to the Daily Dispatch, which is due to appear in the newspaper in due course. The terms of the sale are cash only.

He said Mandla owed his firm R467400 plus interest.

The Cape Town-based lawyer said his firm had formally filed a notice of withdrawal in the high court confirming they no longer represented Mandla, and obtained a court order to attach his assets in lieu of payment.

Media reports last week indicated the legal fees are for various cases in which Titus had represented Mandla, including the exhumation case brought against him by Mandela family members earlier this year.

Yesterday, Titus was unsure how much would be raised, saying “we don’t sell cows in Cape Town” to offset legal fees. But, at a suggested R7000 per head, the proposed cattle sale in execution may net around R350000, which Titus said would cover “just more than half” of what Mandla owed his firm.

While Titus said he was loathe to execute against Mandla because of his respect for Nelson Mandela, the Mvezo chief can expect to feel more heat if he does not pay the outstanding legal fees.

“My hand has been forced.

“I’m hoping before we go to the next stage, sanity will prevail and he will pay my fees.

“If not, I will definitely be ramping up the pressure.”

Titus was taken aback when told Jansen had confirmed he was still acting for Mandla, agreeing that “we can’t act for Mandla and sue him” and promising to “get to the bottom of this”. — rayh@dispatch.co.za
