‘Bomb’ quip sees woman locked up

A PLANNED trip by an East London woman to Pretoria came to an abrupt U-turn at the airport yesterday when she ended up spending the night in a police holding cell.

The 55-year-old woman was arrested at the East London airport yesterday afternoon when she quipped that she had an explosive device in her bag.

Airport authorities were not amused, and she was arrested in terms of the Civil Aviation Act.

The incident happened at the Kulula.com airline check-in desk around 2pm.

Police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala said the woman allegedly joked she had a bomb in her bag.

Mqala said the woman, who works at a local factory, had been on her way to Pretoria.

After receiving a report about the incident police immediately sent both dog unit and bomb squad to the airport.

“But on arrival, police did not find anything and arrested the woman,” she said.

Mqala said the woman was taken to Fleet Street police station and is scheduled to appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court today.
