Copper crooks loot EL school

POLICE in Cambridge are investigating the theft of copper plates from the roof of Hudson Park Eaglets, a pre-primary school in Vincent Park.

School principal Brenda Moss said cop per sheets used to seal parts of the roof were stolen at the weekend and Monday night.

She said the thieves jumped over the electric fence and stole the sheets on the roof of the school, adding that classes were not interrupted although the incident had left parts of the roof and classrooms dam aged.

“We had rainwater come in one of our classrooms and the affected pupils were transferred to the aftercare class.

“The books and posters were also affected as they became wet from the rain,” she said.

The school has no guard and relies on an alarm system, but this was also affected by the theft. Moss said police visited the school yesterday and a case of theft has been opened.

This was the first incident of crime to hit the school.

Roger Barnes, a vice-chairman of the school governing body, condemned the said the perpetrators. had done a terrible thing.

“The amount of damage they have caused to the school cannot be compared to the minimal funds the suspects are going to get after selling the copper,” he said.

He said the incident had inconvenienced pupils who now had to be crammed into one classroom.

“We are going to beef up security in the school to prevent this from happening again. The school will get around this incident,” said Barnes.

Cambridge police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi said a case of theft had been opened. Police are yet to make any arrests. had not yet arrested any suspects. —
