Car win makes dream reality

SHANNON Jewell’s dream of owning a brand new car came true yesterday when he celebrated winning a Peugeot 208 from the Daily Dispatch win-acar competition.

Jewell and his proud father, Johnny, visited the Dispatch to claim their big prize yesterday.

Two days after learning he was the lucky winner of a sexy, new car, Jewell said he still could not believe his luck.

He received an early morning call from a family friend who had read about his win.

“It was around 6am on Monday when I received the news. I wanted my own copy of the newspaper before I would believe it,” Jewell said.

Jewell’s lucky number, 77055, was randomly selected electronically from 11 7405 entries on Friday afternoon and, to prolong the excitement, the Daily Dispatch ran a teaser on Saturday telling readers the winner would be revealed in Monday’s paper.

The 26-year-old winner from Buffalo Flats had never owned a car before winning the competition and said bagging the snazzy Peugeot would change his life for the better.

After weeks of tirelessly buying the newspaper and asking family members to buy their own copies, his efforts paid off. He said he had submitted 54 entries and had faith he would win.

“I was desperate to win and I told everyone that I would win the car.

“Growing up I thought I would have my own car by the age of 21, however life does not always go the way we plan it,” Jewell said.

Johnny could barely contain his excitement yesterday, saying his family could not sleep after hearing the news.

“We are proud and happy for him. My wife could not stop screaming and singing. I am especially pleased as this means he will stop bothering me about my own car,” Johnny said.

“He is generally a lucky person. In 2009 he won a bicycle, which was the biggest prize in a cycling competition in Grahamstown,” he added.

Daily Dispatch editor Bongani Siqoko and marketing manager Suren Packery celebrated with Jewell yesterday.

Asked what colour car he wanted, Jewell did not hesitate to choose his favourite colour, blue.

“I want to pimp it out if I can. I want a powerful sound system and mags. This is a gift from God,” he said.

Packery said: “It was great to congratulate Shannon and his dad in person, he had put in the effort in collecting all his family and friends’ papers for the entries and it was incredibly gratifying to see the joy on Shannon’s face as he celebrated his once-ina-lifetime win.”

“The Daily Dispatch and Peugeot are proud to have been able to give him a happy memory that will forever be etched in his mind,” he added. —
