Long wait for new EC ANCYL leaders as structure dissolved

YOUNG lions who have ambitions of taking over the Eastern Cape ANC Youth League provincial structure will have to wait a little longer before knowing whether they have made the cut or not.

This follows an ANC national working committee decision last week to endorse the youth league’s national task team (NTT) resolution to dissolve the provincial structure led by boxing promoter Ayanda Matiti.

NTT spokesman Bandile Masuku confirmed yesterday that they received a letter on Monday from Luthuli House which gave them the go-ahead to replace the structure with a 20-member provincial task team (PTT).

Rumours were doing rounds this week that those who made it as PTT members would be announced yesterday. Masuku said indeed the initial plan was to announce the team yesterday, but due to logistical challenges, the names would be made public “some time next week”.

Sources close to the developments told the Dispatch that agreement still has to be reached on who would be convener and co-ordinator of the PTT.

There are three names being considered for the convener position.

They are the transport department’s spokesman Ncedo Kumbaca, ANC youth league OR Tambo activist Mawande Ndakisa and Nyandeni mayoral committee member Zama Nondlevu.

ANC and South African Communist Party (SACP) members are also divided on who should get the PTT coordinator position as some favour SACP provincial spokesman Siyabonga Mdodi, while others want Chris Hani youth league activist Butsha Lali.

Masuku flatly refused to speculate on names, saying “we are busy consulting all parties involved”.

“We will wrap up that process during the weekend and some time next week announce the PTT.”

The Eastern Cape ANCYL structure is the only remaining one, as all eight other provincial structures have been dissolved.

The Eastern Cape case was outstanding as the PEC was adamant it should not be disbanded. It took the involvement of the ANC’s top six officials to remove them from provincial headquarters at Calata House.

This was after a team, lead by President Jacob Zuma, convened two meetings with the youth leaders, one in Johannesburg and the last one in King William’s Town, to hear their case.

At the King William’s Town meeting there was intense debate between the league and the ANC PEC, with each group trying to get sympathy from the officials. Thereafter, ANC officials decided the provincial structure had to be dissolved.

Masuku said the task team would be assigned to take regions and the province to conference.

The NTT has set a deadline of September next year for the ANCYL to have a national leadership structure in place.

He said regional and provincial conferences would be held with the September deadline next year for a national conference as the main target. — zineg@dispatch.co.za
