Priest likens Mandela to Christ

FORMER South African president Nelson Mandela was yesterday likened to Jesus Christ during a prayer session in his honour.

“Tatu Mandela, just like Jesus Christ, was through and through God’s deployee on earth so that His will may be fulfilled,” said Reverend Mncedisi Mzileni.

Mzileni, who is the chairman of the South African Council of Churches in the Amathole district, was speaking at a prayer service in honour of the former struggle icon held by the Eastern Cape House of Traditional leaders in Bhisho.

He said people should follow the example set by Mandela.

“We all agree that he was a man of truth, peace, resilience, authority and God’s grace,” said Mzileni.

“You could see a good example of a life lived for others when he was building schools, clinics and houses for the people to enjoy the fruits of the freedom that he has fought for,” he said.

He said Mandela taught South Africans the true meaning of the saying umntu, ngumntu, ngabantu, “no man is an island”.

Speaking of behalf of the House of Traditional leaders, Nkosi Thanduxolo Magadla praised Mandela as a unifier, even after he died.

He made a reference to when United States President Barack Obama shook Cuban President Raul Castro’s hand while getting on stage during Mandela’s memorial service on Tuesday.

“We saw president Mugabe and leaders of Britain there … and because of tata Mandela, they were sharing the stage,” said Magadla. — aphiwed@dispatch.co.za
