Krump star in EL to judge bout

THE first ever krump dance tournament takes place in East London this weekend – and one of the country’s best will be here as a judge.

Krump, an acronym for “Kingdom Radically Uplifted Mighty Praise”, was started in the United States by young people who used it to express anger without violence.

The Eastside Rumble, hosted by Destiny Family Church (DFC), will see Street Kingdom South Africa’s own Lethukuthula “Script” Mtungwa share his experiences with local youth. Durban-born Mtungwa was taught by krump founder “Tight Eyez”, whom he met when the US star visited the country two years ago. His group is an extension of Tight Eyez’ Street Kingdom, which is based in the US.

Mtungwa said he was looking forward to sharing his skills with East London krumpers. “This is my first and I’m excited to dance with the guys,” he said.

The dance form may have started on the streets but today it is used as a way of worshipping God.

Destiny Family Church’s Siya Baduza said they were looking forward to hosting the event.

“I’m excited to learn from Script and to broaden my knowledge and sharpen my skills as a krump dancer. I’m even more excited for younger krumpers, as this is a great opportunity for them to learn from an experienced veteran.”

Baduza started krumping about five years ago and has inspired many East London youths to attend church and adopt this dance form instead of doing drugs or any other illegal activity.

Baduza said he hoped those attending the workshop would leave a good impression on Mtungwa.

“The most recognised cities are Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and Port Elizabeth,” he said, adding that he hoped East London would soon be listed among these. “Events like these will take us a step closer to this.”

The Eastside Rumble starts today at the Destiny Family Church in Belgravia with a teaching workshop by Mtungwa, who will share his skills for an entry fee of R30.

The main event tomorrow takes the form of a tournament to crown the first Eastside Rumble champion and will be judged by Mtungwa.

Baduza said the aim of the event was to entertain the public and create a platform for aspiring krumpers to showcase their talent and skill. Entry is R20. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
