Ex-MEC’s son is ANC candidate

KEVIN Nel, son of former finance MEC Billy Nel, is the ANC’s trump card as political parties go all- out to win the Buffalo City Metro Ward 4 by-election next Wednesday.

Ward 4 includes Bonnie Doon and parts of Beacon Bay, Nahoon, Vincent Gardens and Vincent Heights.

The by-election is the result of DA ward councillor Rowan Thiele’s resignation in January. He is moving to Johannesburg.

The DA has chosen Marion Mackley as its candidate for the ward.

ANC big guns in the form of economic development and environmental affairs MEC Mcebisi Jonas, education MEC Mandla Makupula and local government and traditional affairs MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane introduced Nel to voters at a breakfast meeting yesterday morning.

Nel joined the ANC in 2006 after being recruited by former ANC leader and MEC Sam Kwelita. “I only started being involved in party programmes late in 2009,” said Nel.

A property investor and well-known businessman, Nel has promised to ensure the community receives quality service from the municipality. “I have come to the ANC with no hidden agenda. I am aware of the challenges facing our ward. I cannot change nor intend changing the make-up overnight, but our drive is a passion to serve our community, all races, and to unite us under one banner.”

In a statement, Mackley said: “I believe that only a committed candidate with the full backing of a significant party can make a real difference in Ward 4. That’s why I chose the DA to fulfil my vision. I will continue with the important task of looking after the interests of all the residents of Ward 4.”

Mackley, born and raised in East London, has been a permanent employee of the DA since 2009. She is involved with DA structures in the Buffalo City and Amathole areas.

“I will petition Buffalo City law enforcement to regularly patrol public spaces such as Bonza Bay beach in order to reduce crime,” she said.

lIn January’s by-election in Ward 3, which covers Southernwood, Milner Estate and Braelynn, the DA retained the ward. Its support rose from 54% to 82%, while ANC support dropped from 38% in the 2011 local government elections to 17.6%.

The by-election was one of 14 across the province. Others were in the Mbhashe and Elundini municipalities, both won by the ANC. — mphumziz@dispatch.co.za
