Search on for woman after baby dumped

EAST London police have asked for help in tracing a woman suspected of abandoning a baby girl in a lift in Vincent Park Centre earlier this week.

Video footage from CCTV cameras inside the centre and seen by the Daily Dispatch show a young woman walking inside the mall holding a baby in her arms.

However, it does not show her leaving the baby in the lift where the child was found by staff members on Tuesday morning.

Police are asking anyone who might have information to come forward.

Spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi said they were still searching for the woman seen carrying a baby wrapped in blankets in CCTV footage taken at the mall.

The baby girl, estimated to be about a month old, was taken to Frere Hospital the day she was found and discharged yesterday.

“Investigations are underway and the baby was taken to a place of safety. We are appealing to anyone who can identify this woman. She was seen carrying the baby and therefore she can give us the right direction in this case,” said Mbi.

Centre manager Joseph Parsley said they were shocked by the incident as it was the first time a baby had been left at the centre.

Christian Social Service manager Magdelena von Solms said the baby was in good health and given a name at Frere Hospital.

“We urge mothers who need help with their children to come forward,” she said. — mamelag@dispatch.co.za
