‘Miracle survivor’ dies in hospital

Injuries claim EL man trapped in car for days.

ZOLANI Nobavu, the East London man who survived being trapped in his car for three days, died on Monday, more than a week after being admitted to Life Beacon Bay’s intensive care unit.

The father of two made headlines two weeks ago when the Daily Dispatch reported on his “miracle” survival following an accident on April 12 at the junction of Amalinda Main Road and Woolwash Road.

The 37-year-old Mdantsane man lost control of his white Volkswagen Polo and veered off the road into thick bush after reportedly swerving for a pedestrian.

He was found three days later by Michael Faltein and Bulelani Mayekiso, who discovered him still trapped in his car crying for help and severely dehydrated.

He had endured extreme weather conditions including temperatures where the mercury reached a high of 32°C followed by heavy rains.

Yesterday family spokesman Siyabulela Botha said his death was a result of the accident but could not give further details of the extent of Nobavu’s injuries.

It was reported that Nobavu had undergone surgery to mend a fractured bone close to his spinal cord after the accident.

Botha said the family had been shocked to receive a call from the hospital on Monday afternoon informing them of Nobavu’s death.

“The family has been deeply hurt by the incident. It is still early days; we are not fit to even talk about it. We had hoped that he would make it through but unfortunately that did not happen,” Botha said.

“He was not in a good state. We could not see all of his injuries. Although we can not divulge in full details of his cause of death we can say that his death was a result of the accident. Before the accident he was 100% healthy,” he said.

Nobavu, who was a described as a loving father to his seven-year-old son and three-year-old daughter, worked at Mdantsane’s Magistrate’s Court as a senior administration clerk.

Tributes have poured in since Monday on Facebook with friends saying they were saddened by the news.

It was not clear yesterday when Nobavu would be buried. — mamelag@dispatch.co.za
