Downs may rest key players

FRESH from winning the Absa Premiership title, a party-minded Mamelodi Sundowns could be perfect ducks for Maritzburg United in their last game of the season at the Harry Gwala Stadium today.

Caught up in this great feeling of happiness, it’s highly unlikely that Downs will exert themselves.

Even their coach, Pitso Mosimane said after beating Supersport United, they were going to have a big “party” against Steve Komphela’s charges.

It will not come as a surprise should regulars like Teko Modise, Cuthberth Malajila and Bongani Zungu be given the game off.

Orlando Pirates have promised to place a “wreath” on relegated Golden Arrows – who have fallen through the PSL trap door to the National First Division – after their meeting at Moses Mabhida Stadium this afternoon.

“We want to cement our position in the top eight zone,” said Bucs administration executive Floyd Mbele.

“We expect a tough game from them because they will be fighting for their pride. We are not going to risk and lose against a team that has already been relegated.”

Arrows coach Shaun Bartlett said: “Pirates must not think that we are going to roll over and give them enough room to rotate.”

This is going to be the last match for Manti Moholo and William Twala, who are both on loan from Pirates. They will rejoin the Buccaneers after this game.

Kaizer Chiefs, who lost their PSL crown to Sundowns, have promised to start all over again and challenge for honours next season.

Amakhosi are expected to rest jaded regulars such as Siphiwe Tshabalala, Morgan Gould, Eric Mathoho and Bernard Parker when they face AmaZulu at the Peter Mokaba Stadium today.

“It was a rough ride for us,” said Chiefs general manager Bobby Motaung.

“We know that people are disappointed, but it’s not the end of the world for us.”

Abia Nale and Themba Zwane will make their last appearance for Mpumalanga Black Aces when they face University of Pretoria at Mbombela Stadium. Nale’s contract with Aces expires at the end of this month and he is believed to have accepted an offer with one of the Cape Town-based teams. Zwane, who was on loan from Sundowns, will report back for duty at Chloorkop soon.

Second-from-bottom, Free State Stars, will make a last-ditch effort to avoid the relegation playoffs when they visit Moroka Swallows at the Dobsonville Stadium today.

It’s a tall order for Stars who are keeping their fingers crossed that Supersport beats Polokwane City at the Lucas Moripe Stadium today, and they must also win against the Birds. They trail City by two points.

Stars’ wishes could come through because United’s coach Cavan Johnson has promised to field a formidable squad that will include gangling striker Mame Niang, who has recovered from his ankle injury that kept him out of the game for three weeks.

An improved Ajax Cape Town should have the measure of the unpredictable Platinum Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

Bloemfontein Celtic could end Bidvest Wits’ smooth run at the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium.
