Surfs up as friends reunite

WESTERLY winds, a 1.5m groundswell, and cirrus skies greeted 92 competitors on the second day of the Cool Shoe SA Masters for surfers aged 31 to 58 at Nahoon Reef yesterday.

“It went well. It is rolling smoothly and Gigs Cilliers, seven times world champion kneeboarder, is doing great commentary.”

Seven-time champions Border had done so well that they already had a “case of beer on ice”, Mentasti said.

However, the surfers were not using the waves to ramp into the air and spin like youngsters. Instead it was rail-to-rail power carves and tubes.

She said a number of the surfers have bad backs. “They are calling it the Cataflam Champs (named after an anti-inflammatory),” she chirped.

She said the waves were “beautiful, running and very contestable. There have been a lot of late drops (take-offs) and tubes.”

Jones said Colin Buitendag, former SA Masters champion and father of Women's World Championship Tour top-10 rider Bianca Buitendag, was surfing for Southern Cape and doing very well. —
