Residents celebrate as two found dead

DUNCAN Village residents cheered yesterday as the bodies of two males aged 25 and 16 were removed from a street where they had been left lying dead for several hours.

Mystery surrounds the killing of the two who were allegedly part of a gang that had been terrorising the community. It is believed they were shot and hacked to death the previous night, with some residents reporting that they had heard gunshots between 11pm and midnight on Saturday.

Police were only called to the scene yesterday morning and Duncan Village police station spokesman Captain Stephen Marais said it was still unclear what had happened. He said it was possible the men could have been killed while trying to carry out a robbery as the older suspect was a well-known criminal who had just been released from jail for robbery and assault.

Marais said they were called to the scene just after 6am.

“At this stage no witnesses have come forward,” said Marais, adding that two spent cartridges were found at the scene.

“The cartridges will be sent for forensics for further investigations.”

The bodies, which were covered in blood, were found lying next to each other in Xhewu Street. The 25-year-old had gunshot wounds to the head and abdominal area, while the 16-year-old had suffered cuts.

When the Dispatch arrived at the scene police had cordoned off the area and residents who had gathered to watch cheered as the bodies were loaded into a mortuary vehicle, saying they would finally be able to live in peace.

A number of residents spoken to – who declined to give their names for fear of victimisation – said the 25-yearold deceased was a gang ring leader.

“They used to run this community,” said one resident. “Everyone was afraid of them and now they are no more. We will sleep in peace.”

Another resident showed the Dispatch scars on her face and legs which she allegedly sustained while being attacked and robbed by the deceased.

“I’m not ashamed to say I am glad they are dead,” she said.

Two elderly women who sell mealies on the side of the road said they had also been terrorised by the men.

“Almost every day they would come and take the money that we had made from selling the mealies,” said an elderly women.

The father of the 16-year-old deceased showed little emotion as his son’s lifeless body was carried away.

“I warned him that one day he was going to be killed, but he did not listen,” he said.

Police have asked anyone with information regarding the killings to contact the investigating officer, captain Schalk vanWyk on (043) 701 9200 or 082527-7495. —
