Firefighters still battling Wilsonia factory blaze

BUFFALO City Metro (BCM) firefighters and the disaster management unit spent close to two days trying to put out a fire at a Wilsonia recycling plant which started on Saturday morning.

Reports started coming in at midday on Saturday that the smoke was visible from as far as Beacon Bay, and traffic on the Mdantsane Access Road was backed up in both directions as huge plumes of smoke reduced visibility on the roads.

Traffic officers were on duty on Saturday afternoon directing traffic in an attempt to alleviate congestion.

Yesterday there was still smoke but visibility was sufficient for passing traffic.

Fobian said there were three factories on the premises but only one had caught fire leaving the others unaffected.

By yesterday, officials had not yet determined the cause of the fire.

“It is still under investigation what exactly happened in the factory,” he said.

The Dispatch reported earlier this year that BCM’s fire services had been severely hobbled by the failure to maintain equipment, including multimillion rand fire trucks.

Buildings were run down and staff demoralised, an investigation revealed. —
