FORMER president Thabo Mbeki arrived in Dutywa yesterday ahead of his mother’s funeral on Saturday.Family spokeswoman Fezeka Mabona said the Mbeki family was still struggling to come to terms with the fact that MaMbeki – described as the pillar of the home – had passed away.

y in time for the memorial service, Mabona said.
“He has been in the Eastern Cape but not at home as he was busy with the preparations in East London and he is still busy with them,” she said.
Addressing the media, Mabona said the family was devastated by the death.
“She was everything to us and she advised us on many issues, be it politics or economics.
“We will miss her outstanding wisdom and her extraordinary knowledge of global matters, be it politics, economy or issues affecting rural development.”
Mabona said the older the parent, the stronger the bond with family and friends.
“There are more memories and attachments than with a younger person. We will miss her extraordinary wisdom, humbleness and her love for her people.”
Dignitaries and a high-powered religious delegation arrived at MaMbeki’s Ngcingwana home in Dutywa after Mbeki arrived.
This included Mandla Mandela’s mother Nolusapho Mandela, who was accompanied by members of the Mvezo Traditional Council where Mandla is chief.
Anglican Church Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, his Mbhashe Diocese head Bishop Sebenzile Williams, and Methodist Church of Southern Africa’s Mthatha-based Bishop Andile Mbete also arrived with a large contingent of clergy.
A private family prayer was first held inside the house and later a bigger prayer meeting including other mourners was held. — lulamilef@dispatch.co.za
