Outrage over cruel sheep booze promotion

ATTEMPTS to sell more booze by offering a live sheep on promotion landed a Butterworth bottle store in hot water for animal cruelty.

SPCA farm animal protection unit manager Andries Venter yesterday told the Dispatch they had opened a docket with Butterworth police on Wednesday after public complaints about the lone sheep tethered without water at Spargs SuperSpar’s Tops bottlestore.

Clark said the rep was being disciplined for the incident.

According to Venter, after the animal was offered as a prize last month HTR was informed of the “cruel marketing strategy”.

“A message of regret and apology was received from their MD,” he said, adding that national Spar management had shown Spargs Superspar management the photographs of the sheep tethered on the floor and they had taken “the necessary action to prevent any recurrence”.

Venter said they had opened criminal charges under the Animal Protection Act and the Performing Animals Protection Act but it was possible further offences occurred in how it was handled, transported and slaughtered. He praised the public for reporting it. “We thank all caring people who expressed disgust and who join us in condemning this appallingly cruel ‘competition’. Special thanks to the witness who supplied the necessary evidence to prosecute.” — davidm@dispatch.co.za
