“But it reaffirms for us the importance of the rules we put in place for their safety.”

Herselman described the children who died as having “outgoing and amazing personalities”.

“The older one wanted to be an engineer and the second child was happy that she had a place to live.”

The two children who survived the tragic outing are in counselling.

“This has been a terrible accident and Di and her family are taking this very badly because these children are like their own children.

“So they are going through difficult times, but are getting support from family and friends.”

The Lehys began to look after and foster vulnerable children informally on their farm 18 years ago and, as more children were referred to them, altered stables into a children’s home and later built cluster homes, each of which accommodate six children and a house mother. —
