DJ Kabila to celebrate birthday with fans

RENOWNED wheelchair-bound DJ Kabila will host a string of birthday celebrations with supporters across the Eastern Cape this week.

The Mthatha-born 36-year-old DJ said celebrating his birthday with his fans was his way of thanking them for all their support.

DJ Kabila, whose real name is Siyanda Makanya, will also host parties in KwaZulu-Natal, where he is currently based.

Makanya’s love for music dates back to the 1990s when he was a well-known dancer in Mthatha.

In 1999 he was involved in a car accident that left him paralysed – but that didn’t stop him from pursuing his dream of becoming a DJ.

He continued to make music and is now part of Soulistic Music.

In 2012 Makanya took part in the Miami Winter Music Conference alongside DJ Fresh, DJ Euphonik, Shota, Bucie, DJ Christos and Vinny Da Vinci.

Makanya has also worked alongside his childhood friend DJ Black Coffee.

Makanya’s latest album is the Soulistic Cuts Volume 1 compilation. It features Black Coffee, Mxo Sandimbine and American vocalist Marissa Guzzman.

Makanya said he wanted to inspire other people with disabilities. “Even if you are in a wheelchair, you can do anything. If I can do it, then anyone can do it,” he said.

He said there were still people who did believe in people with disabilities.

“I remember I was playing in Butterworth this one time and asked some guy to assist me. He asked me what I was doing at the venue at night.

“He got the shock of his life when he saw me playing and the crowd screaming.”

He said even before he started DJ-ing, people would wonder what a person in a wheelchair was doing at nightclubs.

“I don’t put any barriers around me and I want other people to know that they can do anything.”

not Makanya said God had taught him to never stop pursuing his dream.

“Anyone can do whatever they want to do they put their minds to it,” he said.

Makanya’s birthday bashes start on Friday at So What Lounge in Mthatha and continue on Saturday at Bar Kulcha in East London.

Tickets for both events will be available at the door. —
