Honda cars to be recalled

Several Honda vehicles in South Africa will be recalled amid fears of possible airbag failures, the Japanese motor manufacturer said today.

"Takata, Honda's airbag supplier, have informed us of the occurrence of an airbag failure, involving a non-Honda vehicle," Honda SA's spokeswoman Joeline Dabrowski said in a statement.

"As a precautionary measure, Honda will recall a small number of 2001 to 2003 model year CR-V, Accord, Civic and Jazz vehicles which may have possible airbag failure."

Explaining the defects, Dabrowski said in some vehicles, the passengers front airbag inflator could produce excessive internal pressure. If the affected airbag was deployed, the increased internal pressure might cause the inflator to rupture.

"In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could be propelled upward toward the windshield, or downward toward the front passenger's foot well, potentially causing injury to a vehicle occupant."

Dabrowski said only a small number of Hondas in South Africa had potential defects.

"Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by Honda Motor Southern Africa requesting them to make an appointment with their Honda dealer for inspection," she said.
