Papic rallies his troops

CHIPPA United coach Kosta Papic is not a happy man despite his charges’ promising 2-0 victory against Platinum Stars last Saturday.

The Yugoslavian coach wants more from his players when they visit SuperSport United tomorrow.

“The most important thing is that we collected all three points from Platinum Stars but I must emphasise I am not satisfied with the way we played,” said Papic. “We are not completely ready yet for the marathon that is the league but I hope as times goes we will get there.”

Papic, a man mandated to ensure that the Chilli Boys do not sink to the National First Division come end of the season, believes his players could have done better against Stars and admitted that the contest with United will be tough.

The 54-year-old coach has ordered Chippa players to maintain a winning streak, home and away but conceded that this will not be an easy task.

He said: “They must know that this team is not in the big league to add numbers, we want to be a respectable PSL team and our motto is that there are no home games and away games, we approach every match with the same mentality and tactics.”

Papic did not mince his words saying Fatau Dauda was his preferred goalkeeper ahead of Tshepo Mostoeneng but he may not be able to field the Ghanaian international if his work permit is not sorted out by tomorrow.

The Pretoria outfit lost their opener against Bidvest Wits last Saturday and will want to win the match against Chippa at all cost to avoid two successive defeats and to ease pressure that is mounting on coach Cavin Johnson to deliver. Chippa on the other hand are aiming at collecting maximum points early in the season before the going gets tough.

On-form striker and captain Andile Mbenyane has been impressive in the captain’s armband but Papic hinted a possibility of a new captain. “Andile is the captain for now but I’m monitoring every player before I decide who is fit to lead the team until end of the season. I need a player with leadership skills and discipline on and off the field,” he said. “It may be him or somebody else.”

Victory for Chippa tomorrow will bolster their confidence before they welcome University of Pretoria next week Wednesday.
