Twelve women arrested for mob justice murders

POLICE arrested 12 women yesterday accused of murdering two men last week in an alleged incident of mob justice near Port St Johns.

Police raided the women’s homes in the early hours of yesterday morning.

After waking up to the news, villagers soon gathered on the soccer field where three people have been killed since the start of this year to discuss the arrests.

Neighbours Masibulele Gwiji, 20, and Hlangabezile Langwana, 17, were killed after being accused of raping women and committing robberies in Thaleni Village last Wednesday.

Village sub-headman Mlindeni Nkumbeni confirmed that the 12 women had been arrested. Scores of other villagers went to Lusikisiki police station to ask for their release.

“They were stolen from us; we only heard about their arrests more than two hours later. It’s painful to see them arrested,” said Nkumbeni.

Police spokesman Captain Mzukisi Godlwana could not be reached for comment yesterday.
