‘Unsavoury’ posters cause outcry

A QUIGNEY handyman was outraged yesterday morning when after a day spent pressure cleaning his client’s building, he found it plastered with penis enlargement posters.

Joe de Vries said he arrived at the Electro-Tech building on the corner of Fitzpatrick and Caxton streets ready to paint it, when he was faced with the posters which have been plastered all over the city.

“They are all over the electrical boxes and the yellow barricades on the roadworks. I scratch them off the phone booth outside my business because even though it’s not my own property it doesn’t look nice. But they just plaster new ones over the old ones.”

Senior pastor Simphiwe Nojoko of Faith Alive Bible Church said he was in the process of mobilising youth groups from Southernwood and Duncan Village to rid the city of the offending posters.

“We believe we can’t just pray about it, but need to do something, so we are putting a proposal to BCM to get permission to remove them because they are against the bylaws. Some young people don’t practice safe sex and they just go to the abortion clinics and that is doing spiritual damage.”

When the Daily Dispatch called the number on the penis enlargement posters a man who identified himself as John-John Bosco said he had a “right” to advertise his business.

“If people phone me to complain I ask my boys to pick them (the posters) off because maybe they put them in the wrong place. If they don’t phone then it means they are okay with them.”

Asked if he was a doctor, he said he could not answer the question saying he would only discuss his methods during a face-to-face appointment. When asked to spell his surname, he slammed the phone down.

Buffalo City Metro spokesman Thandy Matebese said sticking the posters all over the city flouts the bylaws.

He said the city’s law enforcement department had formed a task team to investigate the matter. — barbarah@dispatch.co.za
