Community in the dark after theft

SCENERY Park residents were left without electricity yesterday when cable theft caused a transformer box to explode.

Hazel Klaas, whose house is a few metres from the box, said the explosion happened at around 3am yesterday.

“No one knows exactly what caused the fire but we suspect it is the shack dwellers trying to steal electricity again, because they have been circling the box for months now,” said Klaas.

She said the izinyoka were a common problem for her.

“I have been without electricity for almost two weeks because of illegal connections on my line, and I was told by electricians that it would be impossible to fix because there are so many connections,” she said.

Klaas said not having power placed her health at risk.

“I live with my grandson and we have to cook with paraffin.

“The fumes are unpleasant and a health hazard.”

Another resident, Sithandiwe Sogoni, said he did not understand why the shack dwellers had to inconvenience other residents.

“We understand they have been waiting for electricity but stealing cables puts people’s lives in danger,” said Sogoni.

He said he was frustrated because he paid for the electricity that he is now without.

“I just bought a whole lot of meat that will probably spoil now, depending on how quickly they can replace the transformer,” he said.

Phumza Sithole said electricians had been there on Sunday after someone stole cables from the box.

When the Daily Dispatch arrived at the scene Buffalo City Metro fire fighters and workers were at the scene assessing the damage.

BCM spokesperson Thandy Matebese said the metro was looking into the situation and working on a lasting solution. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
