Pensioner’s plea on Zuma pledge

No promised visit to village after two years.

A PENSIONER’S dream of having President Jacob Zuma visit her village may never be fulfilled.

Mxhelo village resident Ellen Phumeza Mhlanga, 82, wants the President to see how underdeveloped and poverty stricken the area near Alice is.

Yesterday Mhlanga told the Daily Dispatch of how her village was in a state of despair and forgotten by government.

“We do not have water in this village; our road infrastructure is in a bad state. I wanted the president to come and see for himself,” she said.

She said the only bridge that linked the village with other areas was damaged years ago and has not been rebuilt.

“Our children do not go to school when it’s raining and cars cannot access the village because of the damaged bridge.”

She said Zuma had promised to visit “in a week’s time”, but that never happened and they never received further correspondence from the presidency.

Presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj had not replied to questions at the time of going to print yesterday. — siphem@dispatch.co.za
