World Cup legacy fails stadiums

Not much to show for R50m in four years.

FOUR years after the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa, Buffalo City Metro BCM has failed to upgrade 14 sports fields identified to benefit from the multimillion-rand tournament.

As part of the 2010 Fifa World Cup Legacy Projects, the provincial department of sport, recreation, arts and culture allocated R50-million to BCM to develop and upgrade the 14 sports fields.

“In 2011 I made allegations that some of the officials had probably pocketed some of the money because R50-million was spent on the project but there is nothing to show for it,” he said.

In a report tabled before council two weeks ago, Fani said another R2.9-million was needed to complete the outstanding work, which included building public ablution facilities and guardhouses, and painting the stadiums.

The report stated that the “withdrawal” and “termination” of contracts by “incompetent” service providers had been one of the factors that contributed to the incomplete work.

Department of sports spokesman Manzi Vabaza said they had not budgeted for any shortfall and that all security work for the facilities was handled by BCM.

As a solution to the problem, the metro resolved that a tender needed to be advertised and service providers appointed in order to finish off the work. — mamelag@dispatch.co.za
