New look for Vincent shopping centre

R43.5m upgrade underway, manager determined to minimise inconvenience.

VINCENT Park shopping centre is getting a “fresh” look to the tune of R43.5-million to accommodate new fashion and restaurant offerings.

New stores have already started trading and existing ones relocated to make way for more tenants to come.

Centre manager Joseph Parsley said this was the first redevelopment at the centre since the R150-million addition of 4500m² nearly four years ago.

“It is part of a strategic initiative by the owners, Old Mutual Life Assurance Company, to ensure the centre continues to address market needs and trends.

“It will strengthen the merchandise offering and the tenant mix and enhance Vincent Park’s position as a leading convenience destination in a community which has given great support over four decades,” said Parsley.

He said the work entailed the closure of the Ster Kinekor cinema complex earlier this year and the conversion of the theatre space for fashion retailing.

“While it is critical for any business to anticipate and respond to market changes, we are sorry to see the cinema complex closed,” he said.

The centre welcomed what was then East London’s first suburban cinema complex to Vincent Park in 1992 as part of its first major extensions.

However, Parsley said in the last decade there had been a huge change in entertainment offerings and technology.

“That has had an impact on the cinema business and in turn how we best utilise space for market demand. The decision to close followed discussions and a decision by Ster Kinekor not to seek a long lease.”

Parsley said work would be confined to the upper level of the centre, between the Devereux Avenue entrance and the Food Court.

“Any inconvenience to shoppers and retailers’ personnel will be minimised.

“Existing retail tenants will be relocated so new fashion and food offerings can be brought into the mix.”

The Edcon Group has introduced a new fashion offering alongside its CNA store, Edgars Active, which commenced trading last month.

Other newcomers include Fashion Express, Sports Scene and Exact in the fashion category.

A major restaurant addition to the food court is in the process of being finalised.

In the relocations, Foschini moved into most of the Ster Kinekor space and @Home will move into the existing Foschini space. Steers moved into the vacant space next to Mugg & Bean in the food court, and Jay Jays moved from their current space into the old Steers space.

“Legit, a fashion offering in the Edcon Group is busy with shop fit out, and will commence trade in the coming weeks.”

Work on the revamp is expected to be completed by the end of November. — arethal@dispatch.co.za
