SACP bigwig blasts metros

South African Communist Party (SACP) provincial secretary Xolile Nqatha is disappointed party deployees at Buffalo City Metro (BCM) and Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM) had failed to “rise to the occasion”.

Nqatha was giving the Daily Dispatch a brief review of his term of office as the party prepares for its elective conference to be held at the Orient Theatre in East London next month.

His name has reportedly been omitted from the list, which has been circulating through text messages during the past two weeks.

The OR Tambo region’s Solly Nduku is likely to vie for Nqatha’s position while former Mbizana municipal manager Siphiwo Thobela is likely to contest the provincial chairman position.

Nduku could not be reached for comment by the time of going to print while Thobela said there was no formal discussion on leadership succession at this stage as the national office had yet to audit branches and decide who qualified to go to conference.

“Such text messages, which I have not seen, are perhaps referring to informal discussions being held outside party structures,” said Thobela.

Nqatha said he too had heard about the messages, but had yet to see the list. He said only branches could decide his fate.

“This will be clear once we are at the conference and the nomination process begins,” Nqatha said.

The Bhiso MPL, who currently heads the portfolio committee on finance, has been the SACP provincial secretary since 2008.

He said he was happy to have been part of the team which helped grow the SACP’s Eastern Cape membership from 6000 in 2008 to 56000 this year.

“Our term was a very successful term characterised by the growth of the party. Our influence has grown. We are present everywhere, whether in local or provincial government, or the trade union movement,” he said.

It is the conduct of SACP deployees in NMBM and BCM, which Nqatha said was a disappointment during his tenure as secretary.

Both BCM mayor Zukiswa Ncitha and municipal manager Andile Fani are SACP members.

In NMBM, Nqatha singled out former mayor Zanoxolo Wayile, a SACP provincial executive committee (PEC) member, for failing to show leadership while at the helm.

Wayile was recalled last year and replaced by Ben Fihla.

“It’s no secret that whether you are talking about the NMBM or BCM, these comrades were unable to do what was expected of them.”

Ncitha declined to comment, while Wayile and Fani could not be reached by the time of going to print.

About 900 delegates are expected to attend the conference to be held from October 24 to 26. — zineg@dispatch.co.za
