King takes hard line over land invasions

AbaThembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo has come out guns blazing against those who invaded land in Mthatha, vowing to take action against those leading the land grabs.

Dalindyebo was infuriated when a group of people, among them traditional leaders, forced their way onto the Dicoligny land.

The land was leased to the Dutch Reformed Church in Dicoligny by Dalindyebo’s forefather King Ngangelizwe Dalindyebo in the 1700s.

“This is criminal. We cannot allow such anarchy by self-centred people who are hell-bent on grabbing land,” the king said through his spokesman Mfundo Mtirara.

Dalindyebo met the top brass of the Mthatha cluster police and raised his concerns at the ongoing land grabs in and around Mthatha.

He believes land grabs dent the institution of traditional leaders since some perceive traditional leaders to be behind land grabs.

The king also believed people were making quick money by illegally selling land to unsuspecting people desperate for accommodation.

Dalindyebo urged victims robbed of land by grabbers to report it to the police and to him as he too was looking at opening a case.

A group illegally invaded a fertile piece of land along the R61 and vowed to continue occupying it until they got proper houses from local authorities.

The people behind the illegal invasion come from several informal settlements around Mthatha West.

However, the Uniting Reform Church (formerly the Dutch Reformed Church) claimed the land belonged to it and had been earmarked for the development of mid-to-low-income houses. But the invaders refuse to budge saying the land belonged to their forefathers and had only been leased to the church.

Dalindyebo believes there is a syndicate operating aimed at enriching individuals who illegally sell plots.

“The king has strongly condemned land invasion and is committed to work with police to ensure that there is no land invasion,” said Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela.

This is the second time land grabbers have illegally invaded land belonging to a church after people started building houses on land belonging to the Last Hour Harvest Ministry along the same route.
