Daughter’s abduction haunts mom

Three years after her daughter was abducted, a Bhisho mother is still desperately seeking closure in the matter. Vuyiseka Ntonga’s daughter Sivenathi Ntonga was taken from her home in Balasi location near Bhisho on October 1 2011 by an armed man.

“I have done everything I could to try and find my daughter I even went to seek help from sangomas but that did not work. I have lost a lot of money in the process,” said the unemployed mother who depends on her grandson’s child support grant for survival.

King William’s Town police said Sivenathi was kidnapped from her home by a man armed with a firearm. The docket is with Detective Constable Melikhaya Kula of the family violence and child protection unit in KWT.

Police spokeswoman Lieutenant Siphokazi Mawisa said: “Sivenathi was kidnapped while sleeping in the early hours of October 1. She was last seen wearing pyjamas. All preliminary investigations were done with no success.”

Mawisa said they were now pinning their hopes of cracking the case on members of the public coming forward with information.

Sivenathi was 18 when she disappeared. Ntonga said that over the past three years she had heard reports alleging that her daughter had been murdered and buried in a field in King William’s Town days after her abduction.

Speaking about that fateful morning Ntonga said she was sleeping with her daughter and her daughter’s one-year-old son when suddenly a door leading to their room opened. It was just after 1am, she said.

“I woke Sivenathi up to close the door and when she approached the door a man suddenly appeared from the dark and got hold of her. I did not see him but I know that he was carrying a firearm. He ordered me to stay put in the house,” said Ntonga.

She heard her daughter cry out followed by two gunshots.

“Moments later I got up to investigate and there was no one outside,” said Ntonga.

In the days following the incident community members and police from the East London search and rescue unit had scoured a nearby forest but could not find any trace of Sivenathi.

Ntonga said police took statements from suspects including her daughter’s boyfriend but the information they provided had not led anywhere.

“My grandson is four years old now and he keeps on asking where his mother has gone to. I’m really desperate for answers, if she is dead I need to know where she is buried so that we can find closure,” said Ntonga.

Mawisa said anyone who had information regarding Sivenathi’s disappearance should contact Constable Kula on (043)604-0164 or 072-579-7167 and all information would be treated as confidential. — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
