BCM offices shut down

A building used by the Buffalo City Metro (BCM) as a municipal office for more than 40 years, has become a home for vagrants who have vandalised the property.

After the fence was removed, Matebese said the office was closed as it was no longer safe.

“We were then forced to relocate staff and equipment to other Mdantsane offices for their safety as the building was unsecured,” Matebese said.

Another resident Noluthando Zimemo said that the shutdown of the office was costing them money. It was also time-consuming as they had to go to overcrowded offices to seek help.

Jekwa said following the vandalism, he had decided to sell the place.

“I had big plans to develop that place and officials from BCM did not respond to letters sent to them. They have never paid any rent there but I gave them options. So six months ago the place was sold,” Jekwa said.

Ward councillor Senduku Maphuka said they were now working on providing all municipal services at the NU2 councillor’s office.

“The metro lost its case against Jekwa and we stopped fighting for the place although a lot of people used it. The residents have complained that now they pay for transport to go to town but soon that will sorted out,” Maphuka said. — mamelag@dispatch.co.za
