Bigger and better colour run for good cause

This year’s Colour My Run in East London tomorrow promises to be bigger and brighter with 1000 more entries than last year.Organisers of the popular run said although entries had closed and registration was underway, 500 extra entries would be allowed this afternoon.

Cheryl Petzer, principal of Jawitz Properties in East London, the estate agency behind the event, said the response this year was proof locals were desperate for colour.

She said the demand shown this year was a result of the success of last year’s run and in future they hoped it would become an important fixture on the city’s annual entertainment calendar. “This is the second time we are bringing this event to East London and last year we had just under 2500 participants which we thought was amazing because we did not expect that number.

“This year we have 4000 registered participants,” said Petzer.

She said the beneficiary would be the Reach for a Dream Foundation. Last year’s proceeds went to St Bernard’s Hospice.

“The big thing this year is for the first time we have aligned a child from the foundation with each colour and station and the nice part is participants will have the opportunity to meet the children who will all be at their relevant stations,” she said, adding: “Five colours, five colour stations and the fulfilment of five children’s dreams.”

Petzer said the foundation was chosen because of the work it did in restoring hope to sick children.

“The children in the foundation face life threatening illnesses and so we just wanted to do something fun for them while working on getting their dreams to come true and their dreams are so simple and possible,” she said.

One of the beneficiaries is a seven-year-old boy living with TB who would like a Ben 10 games hamper and a 10-year-old girl who has nephritic syndrome – a collection of signs associated with disorders affecting the kidneys – who just wants to spend a weekend horse-riding with her father.

The run is 5km long and each kilometre will be marked by different colour stations where runners will have powder thrown at them.

At the finish everyone will be covered in a range of colours.

Participants can wear what they want but white is recommended to achieve the best effect.

The race starts at 2.30pm at the Old Selbornian Club leading to Bunker’s Hill through Gleneagles Road past Kenilworth Road and Roslin Road before finishing back at the club.

Registration and late entry will take place at the club today from 3pm to 6pm. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
