EC's aspiring filmmakers given rare opportunity

Eastern Cape aspiring producers and screenwriters have been  given a rare opportunity to present their content to the SABC, and received  guidelines from professionals in East London today.

The public broadcaster’s road show was at the Miriam Makeba Centre for Performing Arts, where aspiring filmmaker were educated about the industry.

Various SABC commissioning editors gave insightful presentations on what type of programmes each genre was looking for, putting proposals together and successfully putting your idea across at the pitching sessions.

Addressing the workshop, SABC education commissioning Editor Surekha Singh encouraged attendees to draft a neat, tidy and visually appealing proposal that will sell their idea and give a clear picture of what the idea is about.

“Doing your research on your idea is very important. Pay special attention to the requirements in the brief book,” said Singh. A  Request for Proposals (RFP) book  was released at the centre about two weeks ago.

The workshop focused on the briefs included in the book as well as what was expected from attendees who wished to submit proposals to the SABC. “We are looking to produce high quality, innovative content that affirms ubuntu and inspire change.

We want content that will reflect our rich diversity and represent minority languages,” said drama commissioning editor Nomafu Mpinda.

Aspiring filmmaker Somila Nobatyi of  King Williams Town said: “I am grateful for the opportunity because getting the SABC to notice your idea and actually see it aired is not easy. Now they are handing us the opportunity on a silver platter.”

SABC provincial general manager Zola Yeye urged producers and screenwriters to seize this opportunity and make the most out of it. “The SABC has come to you and is willing to invest in our people’s creativity.

The SABC cannot exist without the input of the people,” said Yeye. This opportunity is also open to individuals with productions that already exists and request air time. Proposals must be typed in English. Writers and producers with  questions can contact .
