Municipality tackles parking fiasco

King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) Municipality has appointed a firm to install and manage parking meters in Mthatha and Mqanduli’s central business districts.

This after years without parking meters or attendants to monitor parking in either town’s bustling CBDs.

The Gauteng-based company was appointed on October 15, giving it a three-year contract.

Currently, parking is a nightmare in Mthatha’s CBD where motorists block others by illegally double parking on busy roads.

Leeds Road and Mthatha’s busy Madeira Street are currently the haven of traffic law violators, especially during peak hours, when motorists park in the middle of the road, therefore blocking other motorists. This often leads to delays, blocking traffic all the way up Nelson Mandela Drive.

The Daily Dispatch has seen the appointment letter given to Park Point (Pty) Ltd by acting municipal manager Nobuzwe Soldati.

The letter, dated October 15 2014 reads: “Kindly be advised that you have been appointed for the installation and management of parking meters for for the rates quoted in the submitted bid document by your company…the project is expected to run for a period of three years from the date of acceptance.”

Mthatha residents and motorists have welcomed the new initiative, but with reservations.

Mthatha Residents Association chairman Graeme Alexander said: “We have such limited parking in this town. The municipality needs to make provision for that. They need to build some kind of multi-level parking.”

OR Tambo Chamber of Business president Vuyisile Ntlabathi said: “We welcome that initiative, provided it will not be a white elephant. If they do it the right way we would be pleased.

“As early as eight o’clock there are people who park cars and leave them whole day in the CBD. We hope that it will be monitored.”

Mthatha motorist Mongezi Duku said although the parking meters would help ease congestion, the problem of lack of parking still remained.

“The best thing that could happen in this town is if we attract moneyed property developers to reconstruct these buildings in town and provide parking within the buildings. That way we can leave our cars in safe parking areas.”

Another motorist Linda Mabhele said he welcomed the idea. “I hope that this will cause a bit of calm during peak hours,” said Mabhele.
