Mutilated body found on rocks

The headless body of an unidentified man was discovered on the rocks near Eastern Beach yesterday by a lifeguard.

The lifeguard said he then ran to the lifesavers’ shack on Eastern Beach to call the police.

“After calling the police I ran back to the scene and waited. I noticed a patrol van approaching and stopped it. The police used their radio to summon other cops.”

Police spokesman Captain Stephen Marais said police cordoned off the scene, but curious motorists started taking pictures with their cellphones.

Marais said police had difficulty controlling the crowd. He advised members of the public to stay away from crime scenes to allow police to do their work.

Marais said it appeared the man – estimated to be in his 30s – had been dead for about a week.

His body was badly decomposed and members of the East London search and rescue unit were called in to search for the missing head, later discovered by a police dog.

The man’s face was badly decomposed. Marais said police were not going to speculate on how the man had died before a postmortem was conducted.

He said an inquest docket was opened. — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
