Swift arrest after cops’ slow response to robbery, rape

Eastern Cape police have made a swift arrest in the case of a Peddie teacher, who was assaulted, raped and struck with an axe in her Hamburg home earlier this week.

The teacher, who cannot be named as she is a rape victim, was attacked early on Monday morning while she was with her 10-year-old son, who also received a blow to the head.

Her relatives lashed out at the police, saying they had failed to respond to her calls despite being based less than 500m from her home.

Peddie police spokesman, Constable Mkhululi Mayoli confirmed at the weekend that two suspects had been arrested.

One was found in possession of suspected stolen items from the victim’s home.

“The suspect and a second person were arrested in Wesley on Thursday morning. Two cellphones which match the description of those taken from the victim, have also been discovered in possession of one of the arrested suspects,” Mayoli said.

Mayoli said one man was facing charges of attempted murder, rape and house robbery.

The mom and son were asleep in their three-bedroom home in the coastal hamlet when an axe-wielding attacker broke into the house through a garage window.

The woman fought back but was hacked on the head with an axe and lost consciousness. When her son tried to switch on the lights, he was attacked sustaining a huge gash on his head.

When the woman regained consciousness, the man demanded a firearm, money and cellphones. He took two cellphones and R2000 in cash. When he could not get a firearm, he dragged her to another room and raped her.

The ordeal lasted for almost two hours.

When he left through the back door, the woman took her son and ran to a neighbour’s house from where the police were called.

But the police told them their vehicle was broken. An ambulance that set out from 100km away, arrived before the police did.

A relative said the little boy was still in a critical condition in hospital after surgery. — bonganif@dispatch.co.za
