SA woman pleads not guilty to drug smuggling

An alleged drug mule from Gonubie pleaded not guilty to smuggling cocaine when she appeared in a Kenyan court yesterday.

According to the eNCA website, Elize de Jager, 45, was arrested in a joint operation between Kenyan and South African authorities last week.

She was travelling from Brazil on a Kenyan flight to Benin when she was arrested on November 22 at Jomo Kenyatta Airport.

She was allegedly found in possession of 4.5kg of cocaine worth R1.7-million.

The drugs were allegedly found in her luggage, packed in shoes and cosmetic lotion bottles, following a tip-off to police.

De Jager worked for courier company Bigfoot Express as a sales rep. Manager Dion Naidoo said she had taken two weeks leave starting on October 4, but had failed to return to work.

“We later heard from her mother that she was in Brazil and assumed she had found other employment. We were so shocked when we heard ,” said Naidoo.

De Jager will remain in police custody until she appears in court again on Thursday.

She is the third South African arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle drugs through Nairobi this year. If found guilty she faces life imprisonment, according to Kenyan newspapers.

Friends and family posting on her Facebook wall sent De Jager words of encouragement and quoted Bible verses of consolation.

One said Jesus would get her through her ordeal, while another said she longed to chat to her. — barbarah@dispatch.co.za
