ANCYL gears up for election

Former ANC Youth League presidents Fikile Mbalula and Malusi Gigaba have been roped in to help the league prepare for its elective conference next year.

Mbalula and Gigaba’s names are contained in a letter written by ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe dated December 2.

In the letter, Mantashe requests them to form part of the national preparatory task team which includes national executive members Nathi Mthethwa, David Mahlobo, Pinky Moloi, Mcebisi Skwatsha and ANCYL provincial chairpersons and secretaries.

This means the affairs of the ANCYL will be run by the ANC until it holds its elective conference next year. The league’s national task team which was tasked with rebuilding the league, was dissolved at the end of last month.

However, ANCYL members were barred from electing new leaders after the ANC converted their elective conference into a consultative conference. Work towards convening a conference that will not be marred by violence, can only start after President Jacob Zuma’s January 8th statement.

According to the letter, a meeting of the league’s preparatory task team has been scheduled for January 13.

The task team is faced with the huge task of reconciling provinces, some of which were divided on leadership preferences leading to the league’s conference last month.

The contest was a three-horse race between former ANCYL treasurer Pule Mabe, national task team coordinator Magasela Mzobe and former deputy president Ronald Lamola.

Some of the league’s provincial conferences, like the one in the Eastern Cape, ended in violence with blood on the floor after delegates threw chairs at each other, leaving some with broken arms.

Both Mbalula and Gigaba are considered to be experienced enough to pull off a violence-free conference. Gigaba served three terms as youth league president while Mbalula served one term.
