Lots to occupy kids over holidays

The school holidays are not even a week old and already parents are pulling their hair out wondering what to do with their kids.

However, East London moms and dads need not despair as there are plenty of activities to keep their little ones occupied.

Vincent Park is hosting a Kid’s Activity Village, which marketing manager Mariaan Hartwig said will be operational until December 23.

Activities include writing letters to Santa, balloon modelling, colouring-in competitions, finger-painting, making Christmas decorations and arts and crafts.

Hartwig said the activities would be spaced out over 10 days, with different starting times.

The village will open daily between 10am and 2pm with all activities free to children aged three to 12 years old.

“There is no entry fee; this is a complimentary service and it’s open to all kids. This is just something nice that the little ones can do while mom and dad are busy shopping,” Hartwig said.

“Pictures can be taken with Father Christmas and his elves in The Dome from today until December 24.”

For the older kids, Formula Dodgems at Hemingways Mall offers arcade games, bowling and bumper cars.

Manager Bradley Whittal said he had already seen a steady trickle of children coming in. “The games here are open to everyone, not just teenagers,” he said.

“With the arcade games, we have car games, shooting games and all the popular teenage games too.”

The centre is open from Monday to Sunday.

For adrenaline junkies, Drifter’s Raceway in Cambridge, which opened in April, offers go-kart racing, paintball and quad biking.

Owner Luvuyo Mpambane said they were usually busiest on weekends.

“But since the school holidays began today there are some kids here already,” he said.

Mpambane said prices for the rides ranged from R50 to R100.

“This will be the first festive season we’re open so I don’t really know what to expect. So far it’s mostly been corporate businesses for their year-end functions but the kids have started coming in,” he said.

Other activities in and around East London include the fun fair with rides operating from Monday to Sunday.

The Orient Pools on the beachfront are open every day while the East London Museum offers a fun educational outing. Other options include the Lion Park, Snake Park and East London Zoo. — zisandan@dispatch.co.za
